Robin Lees of Eos

Robin Lees of Eos

he's Stansted station manager. Even though he officially works for
Servisair, his heart belongs to Eos, you can tell. he popped up
everywhere, guiding us to the "arrivals lounge" (the spa at the
Radisson, to the train station, to the departure lounge when we were
leaving...

How was Eos? people ask. it was the most extraordinary thing: the
heart of a startup in the body of an airline. Just a strange
experience. I love startups and I love airlines, but I never thought
to find something that was both (other than air taxis... next
chapter!) All the staff were cheerful and solicitous and proud, and
the passengers (most of whom seemed to be on freebies just like us)
seemed extra-nice. I had noted the solid pillows on the outbound
trip, and on the return trip Claudia (the same flight attendant we'd
had going out) had prepared me a softer pillow of two smaller pillows
in a big pillowcase.

The bottom line: I was going to take a photo of my comment card on
the return flight, but we didn't get one. I checked strongly agree
that I would "recommend Eos to friends and colleagues" and disagree
that it was "suitable for people like me." [paraphrase] Therein lies
the rub; I really liked it, but I'll probably go back to my regular
carriers. Eos is fighting so many challenges: Stansted Airport, lack
of interline agreements, legacy airline mileage programs that allow
you to upgrade and get flights around the world on partner airlines,
and the fact that Virgin and BA could stomp all over it even as they
try to kill one another. (Of course, I'm sure they'd rather fix
prices, but they can't!)

But I earnestly want them to succeed. Here are a couple of things
they could possibly do, though Robin told me they had thought of at
least some of them and it's harder to change airport infrastructure
than to start an airline.

Fix Stansted Airport: Add more capacity to escalators from the train,
and perhaps offer a complimentary first-class train ticket to
Liverpool Street Station. Allow people to check in at Liverpool
Street and take care of their baggage from there. (this is what BA
used to do at Paddington; it stopped after 9/11, but perhaps the
practice could be revived, especially for Eos's 48 passengers max per
flight.) Liverpool Street is equivalent to Broad and Wall in
downtown Manhattan; imagine being able to take a nonstop train from
there directly to your flight.

Second: Do customs clearance beforehand, just as airlines do coming
to the US from Canada. (Or would that require some new treaty?)

Third: Fly out of La Guardia. That's probably impossible too, but it
would be a real coup, and it would probably ensure Eos's success. It
uses 757s, so that's physically possible.

Those three things would turn this into a Wall Street club similar to
the Concorde. It wouldn't have the speed, but making things easier
at either end is probably even more important. The influencer
marketing program is a good idea, but I felt it was underleveraged. I
was really curious who the other people on the flight were. some of
them may have felt the same; others may have wanted their
privacy. But I think having an opt-in passenger list (as they used
to do on those Atlantic steamer crossings) might have created more of
a community feel.

Whatever! good luck, Eos!
